Commentary
A first-ever Super Over in the SA20 and it has come on Jan 1st. Quite fitting I suppose. On that note we end things. We will be back for more soon. Do join us then. For now it's bye bye from all of us here.
Donovan Ferreira | Player of the Match: Yeah, that was a good one for us. Got a bit closer to the end there than we would have liked. But luckily we could pull it over the line. Yeah, that was fun. It was a bit frustrating sitting on the side for so long. But I'm glad I could contribute and score quick runs for the team. (bowling and keeping in the game) Yeah, I mean, that's kind of been something that we spoke about game one. And it seems like it's going to happen more often now. So, yeah, I'm glad that I can contribute in all three facets. And, yeah, hopefully I can continue this form. (on the crowd tonight) Yeah, I mean, this crowd has been really good for the last three years. And this season they're just actually topping it. So, you know, that gives us a lot of energy. And, you know, they give us a reason to play. So, for us, we keep doing that for the crowd. And they need to keep roaring for us.
Faf du Plessis | JSK captain: There's a few extra grey hairs, eh! Me and you both. Yeah, look, I think as a neutral, as even a fan coming in today, those are the kind of matches you want to see all the way to the end. Ebb and flow, Super Over. And then it's like, there was a lot of different things in the game there, wasn't there? There was times when the batters dominate, there was times when the bowlers look unplayable. So I think you had it all, and that's what you like to see in a good cricket match. There was a lot of madness. (205 was a good score?) Yeah, I did. I thought, looking at the wicket and the way that the spinners bowled first innings, I thought that that was a little bit above par. But as you can see, heavy, heavy dew, and that always just brings the finger-spinners a little bit back, away from that. Because I think otherwise it would have been really quite a lot of spin there in the second innings. So that made the pitch skid on a little bit more. And then it brings in quality batsmanship. And you could see there was a few brutal hits towards the end there that put our bowlers under pressure. But yeah, it's nice to finish. I'd say it's a bit of a lucky sign - when you get a Super Over, you feel you got the rub of the green. (on Ferrira's last ball throw) Yeah, I remember there was a game a long time ago when MS Dhoni was standing behind the stumps for India. I think it was against Bangladesh in the World Cup. And I remember the guy bowling almost like a cut ball across him. And I think Dinesh Karthik or someone. And there was this memory in the back of my head. And I said to him, just go short across him. And hopefully we get a wicket. I wasn't banking on a run-out. So, we bowling for run-outs now. (on Gleeson) Look, I think Glees tonight was exceptional. I mean, it started when the batters put him a little bit under pressure. But that's why you have experience in your team. That's why guys like that are popular around the world when it comes to the circuit. You want to give someone the ball where you know they can just shut a game down. And with a wet ball to bowl that amount of yorkers takes a lot of heart and a lot of character. So, great to have him there. I mean, those two batters, Buttler and Jones, what are the odds without getting a boundary there, they are two strikers, so he bowled excellent. (three wins from three) Yeah, we're doing some good things. And I think the nice thing is we feel like we're still getting to play better as a team. We're doing things slowly, better. We're not certainly not the finished article. So, tonight it's nice to squeak your bum over the line and get two points.
Aiden Markram | DSG captain: Mixed emotions, eh! Great game of cricket once again. Very small margins at the end of the night, and we'll reflect and find ways to be a couple of percent better, but all-in-all hell of an entertaining evening and a good game to be a part of. (emotions right now) Yeah, the last half-an-hour, 40 minutes has been a bit all over the show, but when they've settled down, we'll reflect nicely as a group. I think a lot more good tonight, which was great to see. But like I mentioned, it's really small margins when it comes down to a run or two, and you could nitpick at small things, but ultimately you'll reflect back on plans and execution of plans and things like that and move forward from there. (on close umpiring calls) Yeah, it can be quite tricky, I guess. Batters are moving all over the place, especially with the really short boundary. You have to try and stay away from that, but as far as it plays, you're always looking for consistency. We're not expecting them to be robots and get everything right, but ultimately if it's consistent at the end, I think then both teams are happy to live with that. (first-ever Super Over in SA20) Yeah, that's a first ever for I think a lot of us as well, so it's cool to be a part of something like that. Really cool crowd, really cool atmosphere as well, so nice to be a part of something like that and I'm pretty sure this comp we'll see a couple more. Yeah, it is. Like I mentioned, it's a bloody entertaining game of cricket, so if you're a fan watching down on this, I suppose you've got your money's worth. There's always a bit more to it than just the results at the end of the day. Obviously, for us players it stings, but still a really good spectacle.
In the Super Over - Gleeson again bowled superbly - firing yorkers at will and DSG just got 5. Noor was given the task to defend 5 and Rossouw took just three balls to finish the game. Credit to JSK for hanging in when Jones was going so well and his run-out probably was the key moment in the game. The close umpiring calls for high full-tosses could have gone either way and they will be a talking point for sure. Those calls made the game even more interesting adding to to the tense drama. Stay tuned for the post-match stuff....
22:00 Local Time, 20:00 GMT, 01:30 IST: What a game. JSK win the Super Over and go top of the table. A Super Over on New Year's Day! What better for the crowd at the Bull Ring to ask for. The game see-sawed like an yo-yo. DSG looked down and out until Evan Jones came in and he turned it all around. At one stage with them well behind the required rate, he blasted sixes and 86 came off 5 overs. With 40 needed off 4, JSK came back as Jones and Wiese went off successive balls. Gleeson bowled a fantastic 19th over to leave DSG needing 15 off the last over and after so much drama, with 1 off 1 needed, Ferreira struck the stumps to send the game into a Super Over. Earlier, the top four of DSG struggled and Klaasen looked dangerous but he fell to the impressive Ferreira.
Ball 3: Noor to Rossouw, FOUR! JSK win! Rossouw finishes it off. Is hugged by Ferreira. It's a flat length delivery outside off, Rossouw goes on the back foot and powers the punch, rockets through extra-cover and races away to the deep extra-cover fence. JSK 8/0 and win the Super Over. As soon as he found the gap, Rossouw punches the air and roars in delight
Ball 2: Noor to Rossouw, no run, Rossouw tries to reverse sweep this full delivery outside off stump, he bottom-edges it into the ground, bounces back up and falls to the right of Klaasen. A dot it is. JSK 4/0, need 2 runs to win
Ball 1: Noor to Rossouw, FOUR! And DSG review for LBW. What drama. But this looks to be sliding down leg. Also looks an inside-edge on to thigh. UltraEdge proves the spike. DSG lose the review. It's a length delivery and sliding down, Rossouw looks to slogsweep and the thick inside-edge hits the back thigh and runs away fine, beating short fine to his left. JSK 4/0
Out walk the DSG players to the middle. Rossouw and Ferreira are out in the middle. Noor has a chat with Markram. What's the field?
What an over that is from Gleeson. Just 5 off it. And he nailed the yorkers. JSK need 6 to win. Who will their batters be? And who will bowl for DSG? Fleming has a chat with Faf. Rossouw it looks like will be one of the batters. He is shadow-practicing at the moment. Has a word with Albie Morkel. Noor it will be bowling. He chose the ball. Ferreira has the helmet on. So he will be one batter.
Ball 6: Gleeson to Jones, run-out, 1 run completed. Gleeson nails another yorker under pressure. Jones tries hard to get under the ball to belt down the ground, but only toe-ends it along the ground to long-on. Buttler quickly returns for the second run but in reality it wasn't on and very difficult for the striker to get back in time. Jones tried his best and put in the dive, but the throw from De Villiers was decent enough for Ferreira to collect and reach out for the stumps. Had he run in a straight line he may have been able to steal the second run. Jones ran diagonally and that cost him. Evan Jones run out (Matthew De Villiers/Donovan Ferreira) 3(3) - DSG 5/1 - JSK need 6 to win
Run-out check. Has Jones got back in time? OUT
Ball 5: Gleeson to Buttler, 1 bye, a slower-ball leg-cutter outside off, line call that was on the tramline, Buttler reaches for it to cut, misses, they sneak a bye in and it's not a wide given by umpire Stephen Harris. Marginal call and it goes in favor of JSK. DSG 4/0
Ball 4: Gleeson to Jones, 1 run, Jones tries to set a base deep in the crease to absolutely muscle this down the ground but only gets an inside-edge onto pad, ball rolls to short fine-leg. DSG 3/0
Ball 3: Gleeson to Buttler, 1 run, Very full on off, Buttler gets forward and drills it hard and straight to long-off. Just one. DSG 2/0
Ball 2: Gleeson to Buttler, no run, smart short slower delivery wide of off stump on seeing Buttler back away early to access the off-side, Buttler swings and misses - DSG 1/0
Ball 1: Gleeson to Jones, 1 run, dropped by Matthew De Villiers at long-on. What drama. Very full on the stumps, Jones gets forward to loft, De Villiers comes in to catch two-handed and hits the wrist and drops down. DSG 1/0
Buttler taps Jones on the back as they walk in. Will be Gleeson it is.
21:37 Local Time, 19:37 GMT, 01:07 IST: Wow! What drama. We are now into Super Over territory. DSG will bat first. Let's see who they bring in. We are not done yet here. So hang tight folks. Faf and Stephen Fleming have a chat. Same in the DSG camp. The crowd are dancing, partying and doing what not. Buttler has the pads on. Definitely Evan Jones has to come in. And who will bowl for JSK? Gleeson or Mulder? Out walk the JSK players to the middle. We will know the answes soon to all the questions. So Buttler and Jones it is. And Klaasen at 3.
