Commentary
SA take a 1-0 lead and have set up the rest of the series in a fine manner. This series will be tight! India will definitely look to bounce back in a couple of days. We will be back then. Bye bye for now...
Laura Wolvaardt: Yeah, great start. It's a really good all-round performance from the group. We were good in all three departments and it's actually the way we would like to start the series. (On the partnerships) The way Luus started, it really set up the chase for us. Annerie Dercksen batted excellently, took so much pressure off the chase. It was so nice to be run-a-ball, hitting like 40 off 30 to go. Would have liked to finish it a little bit earlier, but yeah, I think we broke the back of the chase pretty early, which was nice. (On her own batting) Yeah, I felt a lot better out there. I had a bit of a tough tour of New Zealand, but sort of just went back to basics a bit, sort of just try to stick to the things that I do well. And yeah, happy it all came together today. It was quite nice to bat under lights. I had to play some good cricket shots. (What happens between now and the next game?) I think rest up tomorrow. One of the keys today was how good we were energy wise. We were absolutely buzzing in the field. So, rest and recover and bring that same energy to the next game.
Smriti Mandhana: We definitely started well with the bat. Shafali really got going. We could not capitalise as a batting unit. But positives for us is that even though we lost our way in the bowling innings, we came back really well to take this match to the last over, speaks a lot about the players. A lot of learnings for sure. We've had one month almost after the Australia series. Everyone's getting into the groove, so I'm sure this match, we'll all go back and think about what we have to work on and come back stronger. Next match, day match, we had two sessions in the afternoon here when we came. So, I'm sure that all the girls will be well prepped. (On her batting) Been batting well in the nets, but couldn't come up today, got out unfortunately, but if you get out in a low score, you're always pumped to go out in the next match and again get a big one and win the match for the country.
Ayabonga Khaka, Player of the Match: To be honest, today was a lot, us coming back, had a tough tour (NZ). I don't think we executed well as a team. And it was just a day to come and make sure that we improve on those things as well. (What was important on a dry surface?) It was about keeping it simple. Hit our own lines and lengths. I think that's what we spoke about on the side before we came to this game, and I think we did that as a bowling unit brilliantly. And the batting came in and they finished the game for us. (Understanding the game more now?) I think there's always a place for improvement, but yeah, I think I played for so long. I do understand my strength as well but I'm always trying to be better as a bowler more than anything.
21:18 Local Time: SA were the better side. They did well at the death. India were stopped to below 160 and that I guess hasn't helped the case for the visitors. India also spilled plenty of wides which meant SA didn't have to work hard for a few runs which were given away as freebies. Wolvaardt set up the chase with her clinical fifty and then Chloe Tryon and Annerie Dercksen put up the finishing touches with some lusty hits towards the end. The Indian pacers had a hard time and that is where they will want to improve. In India's innings, the last 34 balls went for only 38 runs and that is where SA gathered momentum and never let it go in their chase. India fell behind the 8-ball and never quite played catch up.
Deepti Sharma to Chloe Tryon, SIX, sixxxxxxxxerrrrrrr! That was sweet timing from Chloe Tryon. Followed the batter, angled it in, Chloe Tryon backed away and smashed it over deep mid. That was a clean hit. The crowd erupts. SA take a 1-0 lead in this 5-game series. The hosts will be chuffed with this. India were sloppy and rusty and that has costed them this
Deepti Sharma [2.0-0-18-0] is back into the attack
End of Over 0: N/A runs, N/A wkts
Arundhati Reddy to Chloe Tryon, 1 run, 6 needed off the final over! Fuller ball and clubbed down to long-on. India would be so gutted. They had a real chance tonight but those extras and the chances that they have given I guess has costed them the game. Still, the game isn't over but 6 off 6 balls would mean the batting unit is supposed to clinch it from here. Deepti will bowl the final over. Does she have some tricks to script a miracle?
Arundhati Reddy to Annerie Dercksen, 1 run, digs it down to cover for a single as that was very full
Arundhati Reddy to Chloe Tryon, 1 run, driven down to long-off for a single
Arundhati Reddy to Chloe Tryon, 2 runs, the fielder at deep mid (Anushka) came in, charged at the ball, dived but the ball popped out I guess. She tried to get her fingers under the ball but couldn't happen. That was fuller, outside off, Chloe Tryon slog swept it flat
Arundhati Reddy to Annerie Dercksen, 1 run, 11 needed now. Very full, angled in, whipped down to long-on for a single
Arundhati Reddy to Chloe Tryon, 1 run, fuller length delivery, driven down to long-on for a single
Arundhati Reddy [2.0-0-21-1] is back into the attack
End of Over 0: N/A runs, N/A wkts
Shreyanka Patil to Chloe Tryon, 1 run, charges down and tucks the ball down behind square for a single. India will look at the plenty of extras they have conceded. SA conceded only wide
Shreyanka Patil to Chloe Tryon, no run, sharp turn, Chloe Tryon misses the tuck
Shreyanka Patil to Annerie Dercksen, 1 run, dropped! Renuka has dropped a sitter. Was a low full toss, Annerie Dercksen paddled it and found the hands of the fielder who let it spill it. Poor cricket all-round
Shreyanka Patil to Annerie Dercksen, no run, another dot. India needs to bargain this wicket! That was stabbed down to cover and no single there as the fielder at cover point charged on the ball
Shreyanka Patil to Annerie Dercksen, no run, dot ball. Last throw of the dice I guess for India. Very well lured up, pushed down to point
Shreyanka Patil to Chloe Tryon, 1 run, knocked down on to the on-side for a single
