Commentary
That's it for the day. It's a single-header between Lahore and Quetta tomorrow. See you all in about 20 hours time. Good night!
Shadab Khan | Islamabad United captain (translated from Urdu): (What did they do differently?) I don’t think we did anything very different. We try to execute our plans whenever we play a match. I think even in the last match we were executing our plans in a similar way, but when we lost two wickets at that stage, we lost momentum. But today our death bowling, the way our rates were, and there was also talk about our bowling - that throughout the tournament our bowling hasn’t been that good - but I think the way the bowlers made a comeback, the momentum we got from there, we carried it on. (On things going their way and wonderful opening duo of Sameer and Conway) Obviously, when you win, some of your flaws get hidden, but I still think there are quite a few areas we need to improve. Obviously, when you win, everything looks good, but I still believe there’s a lot we need to improve. I think the way Sameer and Conway are playing - especially Sameer - we knew he is an exceptional talent, but to come onto such a big stage and prove himself the way he is doing, hopefully he continues to perform like this throughout his career and throughout the tournament. (Is it good that they had a few blips early on in the tournament?) It’s like that because we learned from last year as well - that we gained momentum at the start and then began to lose it. I think whichever team gains momentum at the right time will win the tournament.
Moeen Ali | Karachi Kings captain: "We just haven't seemed to bat very well or bowl very well and in the field. So we've been pretty poor since we've been here. Some good individual performances here and there, but generally we've leaked a lot of runs in the powerplay, we've also misfielded a lot. I thought batting in particular today, we were a bit passive and not really taking the game on and the game is changing all the time. I think you have to just be a bit braver to get those extra runs, even if you lose wickets because we do have a long batting line and you've got to try and use that for the best you can. (On him potentially batting higher) Probably me, Khushi (Khushdil Shah), even Abbas who can potentially come in a bit earlier. It's okay, I think it was probably just before the last five overs. It's difficult to first come in and take guys on. You need a few balls at least. So yeah, potentially we can look at that tactically and see how we can best use our players. (Update on David Warner) Yeah, he's better today than he was probably two days ago and hopefully he'll be ready for the next game. If not, definitely the one after."
Sameer Minhas | PoTM (translated from Urdu): (Preparation for the run-chase)Nothing special. Just a simple plan to play ball by ball and stick to the basics depending on the delivery. We decided we would only go for boundaries when the ball was there to be hit. If we felt a particular ball could be sent for a boundary, we attacked it. I’ve worked a lot on my batting and also on fitness. All these things are important because if your fitness is good, it really helps your fielding, batting and running between the wickets. (On his opening partnership with Devon Conway) I learn a lot from him, we back each other and give confidence to each other.
22:03 Local Time, 17:03 GMT, 22:33 IST: The bowlers set it up with good bowling and the batters dominated to make a mockery of the total. To be honest, this was never a 150 pitch. Reeza could never get going, Azam tried hard but it wasn't his night. In reply United got off to a great start as Conway and Sameer made it look so easy. The duo were separated by a smart stumping as the latter was dismissed. Conway held fort and ensured his side got him easily with Shadab playing a very good cameo at the end.
End of Over 0: N/A runs, N/A wkts
Abbas Afridi to Devon Conway, FOUR, pulled away through mid-wicket. That's the fifty and the game. Third successive 40+ score from him. Was a short delivery, Conway pulls in front of square and it races away. The United jump to second spot on the table with this wonderful win
Abbas Afridi to Shadab Khan, 1 run, short ball down leg with fine leg up, Shadab Khan mistimes the pull and it goes over the infield
Abbas Afridi to Devon Conway, 1 run, slower delivery on the off stump, knocked to mid-wicket
Abbas Afridi to Shadab Khan, 1 run, slower delivery, wristed to deep mid-wicket
Abbas Afridi to Shadab Khan, 2 runs, worked away through square leg and they get back for two
Abbas Afridi to Devon Conway, 1 run, knocked to long-on
Abbas Afridi [1.0-0-7-0] is back into the attack
Timeout. Just two hits needed to end this game
End of Over 0: N/A runs, N/A wkts
Hasan Ali to Shadab Khan, no run, great yorker outside off stump, Shadab digs it out
Hasan Ali to Shadab Khan, 2 runs, and to add to the frustration, Khushdil Shah drops a skier at deep mid-wicket. In fact he had his hands well inside the line. Signals for treatment as he may have fingertipped it. Shadab Khan sent this short of length delivery miles into the night sky, surely touched a few stars with the height on it. Tough catch, but should have been taken at this level
Hasan Ali to Shadab Khan, wide, short delivery on the stumps, Shadab sits under it and it's called a wide. Looks like Hasan Ali isn't pleased with the call from the square leg ump and lets him know his thoughts on it
Hasan Ali to Devon Conway, 1 run, short and on the leg stump, pulled to deep square leg
Hasan Ali to Shadab Khan, 1 run, very full delivery on the stumps, flicked to deep mid-wicket
Hasan Ali to Shadab Khan, FOUR, this is a thick edge that escapes fine and we have no sight on third man in the frame. Short of a length delivery outside off stump, Shadab Khan backs away to slash, edge gives them four
Hasan Ali to Shadab Khan, SIX, advances and nails this over mid-on. The off-cutter into the wicket but because he stepped out he made it into a length ball and swung nicely through the line over the infield
