Commentary
That's it from our side! This win marks Bangladesh's highest run-chase since 2025 and it's also their highest run-chase at this venue. New Zealand were in the game at certain points but their inexperience showed and they crumbled under pressure. Join us for the second T20I from the same venue day after tomorrow. Until next time, goodbye and cheers!
Litton Das | Bangladesh captain: I think it was a really good match. The way we batted, especially Hridoy, made me very happy. He took responsibility for the team, and he batted really well in the middle. Emon also batted really well. Shamim then finished the game strongly. We lost only one wicket in the powerplay, which was important. When you are chasing a big total like New Zealand’s, you don’t want to lose too many early wickets. 183 is a big total on this ground because the wicket was not easy to bat on. It was slow. During the innings break, I said we needed to score well in the powerplay. The way Hridoy, Emon and Shamim batted in the middle overs it looked easy but it certainly wasn't. (On his knock) The surface was a little bit up and down. I prefer to bat on a good and even surface. When the ball keeps low, it's not easy.
Towhid Hridoy | Player of the Match: (On whether it was a good pitch to bat on?) Yeah, it was very good to bat on. (On batting with Tanzid) I was focused on the situation and tried to play according to it. At that time, we needed runs, so I decided to attack. (On his stand with Shamim) Shamim played extremely well. He came in and played a tremendous innings.
Nick Kelly | New Zealand captain: (Nearly won the game?) I thought 180 was a competitive total on that surface. At the halfway mark, we felt we might have been slightly above par, so we were happy with it. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough in the end. After the 10th over in the chase, they were 77 for 2. At that stage, we felt we were in the game and on top. But in T20 cricket, you can’t allow the opposition to settle after losing a couple of wickets. When Sodhi picked up the third wicket, we believed we had control and could build pressure for a few overs. However, that didn’t happen. They showed strong intent and shifted the momentum back in their favour. (Were they 10-15 runs short?) When you lose the game, you think you probably needed a bit more. I think they had eight or nine sixes while we were around the four to five mark, so that was probably the main difference. But we will learn from today and be back in a couple of days and have a go again.
17:50 Local Time, 11:50 GMT, 17:20 IST: A commanding performance from Bangladesh! At one point, it looked like New Zealand would go past 200 but the hosts pulled things back with the ball to restrict them to 182 on a flat surface. In response, it was a sedate powerplay for Bangladesh and they also lost the wicket of Saif Hassan in it. Tanzid struggled for rhythm as he wasn't able to time the ball. Litton scored a few boundaries but couldn't convert his start into something big. Tanzid perished soon after as well. But, the duo of Towhid Hridoy and Emon came together and batted with a lot of flair and conviction. Both of them found the boundaries consistently to take the pressure off their side. Emon fell against the run of play but he already had done his job with his quickfire cameo. Shamim came in and hit the ball brilliantly from the word-go. The inexperience of the Kiwi seamers was exposed as they lost their radar under pressure and offered a number of freebies which were taken toll off by the Bangladeshi batters. Towhid stayed till the end and guided his team home with a superb fifty. Bangladesh eventually cantered to the finish line with two overs to spare. Stick around for the presentations...
